The Electoral Commission remains in discussion with Reform UK over the adoption of a revised party constitution, released and then voting-on at the party constitution in September 2024.
The Electoral Commission didn’t receive an updated constitution until late January 2025, the deadline to submit was the end of January 2025.
The party constitution is the very backbone of democracy with a party, and the version put forward in September 2024, solidifies Farage’s position, and it makes it very difficult to have a change of leader without Farage voluntarily stepping down. It is unclear what has been put to the Electoral Commission, and what is being discussed.
Reform UK have said that they have now moved from a limited company with shareholders to a company limited by guarantee, or the members. However since there isn’t a revised constitution to go with that change, the party is now under the control of Nigel Farage and Zia Yusuf. That could be viewed as a positive, but only a piece in moving towards democracy. As a change in itself, and without a revised constitution, it doesn’t create a democratic party.
