Reform UK have released a set of intentions around managing immigration to the UK.
The strategy is about identifying, detaining and deporting those that shouldn’t be in the country legitimately.
- The proposals are to leave the European Courts of Human Rights (ECHR)
- To replace the Human Rights Act and replace it with a Bill of Rights
- and pass a further Mass Deportation Bill
The Deportation Bill is outlined in the document below.
The questions that need to be answered are:
Can or will Reform UK actually do this anyway – there seems an assumption that they are the party that will deliver, where the Conservatives and Labour have failed. But that assumption seems to be based around people wanting change and viewing Reform UK as a route to that.
What are we gaining and losing with coming out of the ECHR. There is certainly an issue around the ECHR being enshrined in the Northern Ireland Good Friday Agreement. Advocates will argue that it provides the essentially back-stop of rights for individuals. Opponents will say that it puts power to the courts, away from the Government, and that the scope of the ECHR has expanded significantly with a focus away from the rights of the majority.
